Aluminum vs. Other Gutter Materials
October 22, 2018In the 19th Century, aluminum was considered more precious than gold or silver. Refining this metal from ore requires extensive work, and it was only in 1889 that cost-effective manufacturing techniques were developed. Aluminum nowadays has become a pillar of infrastructure in the U.S. Aluminum is used in countless ways, including in the manufacturing of gutter systems and gutter cap alternatives that provide many years of excellent performance.
Read on as Gutter Helmet® of Eastern NY explains what makes aluminum a better option than other gutter materials.
Copper Gutters
Copper gutters are known for their rustic charm, but they come at a steep price. They are also more difficult to work with than aluminum since they require soldering at the joints and also require copper nails, fittings and fasteners. This makes it more difficult to repair, especially if there are lost components.
Steel Gutters
Steel is more economical than copper, but steel gutters aren’t as durable. Steel gutters tend to rust over time, unlike aluminum gutters. Without a rust-inhibiting coating material, your steel gutters may give out in as little as five years, depending on the weather.
Vinyl Gutters
One of the selling points of vinyl gutters is they don’t rust, similar to aluminum. However, vinyl gutters are prone to cracking due to temperature fluctuations. Leaks between the sections can also develop over time.
Zinc Gutters
This gutter material is known for its superior strength, but it is used primarily for historic restorations projects. Zinc isn’t the perfect gutter material for your home if you aren’t fond of patina, a thin layer that creates the greenish appearance on the surface.
Aluminum Gutters
Aluminum is the most widely used gutter material, and for good reason. Aluminum gutters are rust-resistant, lightweight, versatile and easy to install. They’re also affordable, unlike copper and zinc gutters.
Apart from aluminum gutters, Gutter Helmet of Eastern NY installs Gutter Helmet®, a smart alternative to an ordinary gutter filter. Call us today at (866) 252-9400 or fill out our online form to learn more about our products and services.
